Who am I?

This site is maintained by William (Bill) Silvert, who was born in the USA, is a Canadian citizen, and has been permanently resident in Portugal since February 2000. He is semi-retired and works as a Senior Research Fellow at the Portuguese Institute for Fisheries Research. For more information consult his professional home page. He also does consulting and scientific editing through his empresa, Ciência Silvert.

Since this is his personal site, some of his personal files are here. He sometimes writes letters to the editor, and the ones relevant to the Expat community are included here.

In addition, items of possible use (or at least of interest) to the Expat community are included:
bulletA section for N. Americans on how to use American electric appliances in Europe (and elsewhere) with information on power cables.
bulletAnother section on AC adapters for small appliances.
bulletTV and video formats.
bulletAnd what about cell phones?
bulletInformation on using bank cards in Europe.
bulletDriving in Portugal.
bulletAdvice on the food we miss.
bulletAnd then there is the bureaucracy:
bulletBecoming a resident of Portugal.
bulletBecoming a citizen of Portugal.
bulletDocumentation.
