Coming Events
I will add notification of meetings and other events as they are sent
to me. If the list is not too long, I will keep records of past events so
that you know what you missed, and get the flavour of what is going on in
Portugal.
Acting
on requests originating with the US State Department, I no longer list
the location of events
related to American expatriates, as there is fear that they may be subjected to
attack. As an American citizen myself I am strongly
opposed to this policy, but I respect the concerns of my countrymen. In any
case, I have not been receiving regular notification of events to be included, so this
calendar is not terribly useful if you are looking for
information on upcoming meetings. Expats are advised to consult the local foreign-language papers for more current information.
I have included some religious holidays, but these dates are not
always from authoritative sources, so do not count on them being correct.
Portuguese holidays, both religious and secular, are included,
and designated with a small flag. I will be happy
to include other religious and national holidays if they are
brought to my attention.
There are several sites on the web which you can
consult for religious holidays, such as
HEBCAL for the Jewish calendar. I will be happy to add links for other
religious holidays if anyone sends them to me.
I try to keep the calendar current, but
especially with religious holidays which appear on unexpected dates, it takes
time to figure out when they will occur next so I leave them until I have
updated information (four of the Portuguese holidays are movable, so I have
entered these for a couple of years in advance, along with some movable
religious holidays). Keep in mind that most towns in Portugal
have their own saints' days, which are local holidays. For some
major towns (as well as ones I visit often!) these are as follows:

* Note on the Jewish holidays ( ), they start at
sundown, and Erev means eve - most calendars show the first full day, which is
one day later than what is shown here. Source calendars can be confusing,
so these dates may be off. Note
- Moslem holidays depend on the sighting of the moon and they do not always
start on the same days in all countries. For example, the start of Ramadan
depends on when the moon is full relative to sunset, so it can occur a day
earlier in the Americas than in Europe (this was the case in 2003). Even in the
same locations, Sunni and Shi'ite Moslems do not always agree on the dates of
Ramadam. I have thus discontinued inclusion of Moslem holidays, but will include
them if the information is provided. |
